About 2,25,000 families have been identified from Karnataka for the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY), under which LPG gas connections are provided to the poor families of the nation.

The Secretary of Department of Food and Civil Supplies Mr. Harsh Gupta disclosed by saying that the State government would provide double burner stoves for free to the beneficiaries. Under the scheme, LPG connections are given to below poverty line families without a security deposit.

Mr. Gupta said that the department had discontinued the supply of kerosene to about 35 to 40 lakh ration card holders.

Of the roughly 1.36 crore families, who were receiving kerosene under the public distribution system, more than 1.1 crores had LPG connections.

The list of kerosene consumers with the Department of Food and Civil Supplies was matched with the list of families having LPG connections provided by oil companies after the ration cards were linked with Aadhaar. Mr. Gupta added that it left them with only about 25-26 lakh families without LPG connections, who needed kerosene for cooking.

A physical verification of the kerosene consumers was under way with the department stopping the supply of kerosene to 35 to 40 lakh ration card holders. The supply of kerosene would, however, continue to families, mostly in rural areas, who are still using the fuel for lighting.

Mr. Harsh Gupta said on the use of kerosene for purposes other than cooking and lighting that the department would soon begin selling white kerosene, which is unsubsidized, through fair price shops. He added that however, white kerosene would not be sold through fair price shops which continue to supply subsidized kerosene as it gives room for deceit.

Mr. Gupta said during the recent exercise to link Aadhaar cards with ration cards that 65 lakh bogus ration cards were unearthed. Out of the 4.1 crore ration cards, only 3.45 crore were found to be genuine. He said that out of The bogus ration cards would be weeded out. He added that if bona fide card holders had lost their cards in the process, a provision would be made to register themselves again for a fresh card.
