Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) is also an ambitious scheme launched by Indian Prime Minister Narender Modi. This scheme has been launched with a target of providing 1.5 crore gas connections to the women of poor families in the current financial year. This target of distributing 1.5 crore connections has been achieved within a period of 8 months.
This scheme is being implemented across the nation and by the implementation of PM Ujjwala Yojana, the vision of Hon’ble Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi to provide clean cooking fuel to poor households in the country has been taken forward.
The eligible women beneficiaries have been identified on the basis of Socio-Economic Caste Census (SECC). An adult woman from every identified BPL family has been given LPG connection with a financial assistance of Rs.1600 by the central government.
PM Modi had launched PM Ujjwala Yojana in Baliya, Uttar Pradesh on May 1, 2016. He announced the release of 5 crore LPG connections to BPL families over a period of three years by the allocation of Rs 8000 crore in the Union Budget on 29 February 2016.
14 states including hilly states of J&K, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and all North-East States having LPG coverage less than the national average are identified as priority states for implementing the scheme.
States Having Maximum Gas Connections Are: –
– UP (46 lakh),
– West Bengal (19 lakh),
– Bihar (19 lakh),
– Madhya Pradesh (17 lakh)
– Rajasthan (14 lakh)
These States constitutes nearly 75% of the total connections released. The households belonging to SC/ST constitute the large chunk of beneficiaries with 35% of the connections being released to them.
It is also remarkable that the national LPG coverage has increased from 61% (as on 1 January 2016) to 70% (as on 01 December 2016) by the implementation of PMUY.
