A senior official of the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas says that the eligibility criteria have been extended for this to add more people. Now all the families of SC, ST and MBC have been made eligible. Although it must be seen that in such families, there should not be any gas connections in the past.
Forest Residents Will Also Be Benefitted
He said that the people residing in the forest will get benefits of this scheme whether they have a gas connection or not. Apart from this, the beneficiaries of the Antyodaya Anna Yojana, or beneficiary of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Rural), who live on the island of a river, working in any tea plantation, have also come under this scope. Without considering their financial condition, they will be given free connections under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana.
So far, 4.07 Lakh Connections were Distributed
Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley introduced this scheme in the budget of 2016-17. The formal launch of this scheme was done on May 1, 2016 in Ballia, Uttar Pradesh. As many as 4.07 crore connections have been provided under the scheme till May 26, 2018. At that time there was only one condition for eligibility that the name of the beneficiary family was passed in the census of 2011, below the poverty line. In the official terminology, they are called BPL families.
